Hukan studio was built in 2010, in Huairou district, on the intersection of the 6th ring of Beijing and the Beijing-Chengde highway. It is set at the foot of the mountains that separate the capital from the steppes, and used to belong to the enclosed funerary area dedicated to the Ming dynasty imperial family. Integrated in a small village, Shayukou, right at the junction of Huairou, Changping and Shunyi districts, it sits today in an administrative no man’s land.

Hukan studio is integrated in Qiaozi Art Commune and Shangyuan Art Museum, the former being a group of artists having each designed their own studio, and the latter being a 6 months residency program for artists from around the world.
